Water Resources
Water Resources concerns the availability and constructive use of the earth’s water supplies. It is embraced by multiple disciplines, including engineering, agriculture, environmental science, geography, geology, physical sciences, forestry, and ecology.
Hydrology and Hydraulics
Hydrology and Hydraulics within the field of water resources concerns the water cycle and the resulting flow of water and its constituents. Hydrology is the science of the water cycle – from precipitation to runoff over the land surface and infiltration into the ground, collection into ponds and streams, and evaporation and plant transpiration back into the atmosphere.
Sedimentation Engineering
Sedimentation Engineering is the application of science and technology to prevent or solve waterborne sediment problems from streams to the ocean caused by unwanted sediment accumulation, excessive erosion, or concentration of sediments.
Navigation Engineering
Navigation engineering is life-cycle planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of safe, secure, reliable, efficient, and environmentally sustainable navigable waterways (channels, structures, and support systems) used to move people and goods by waterborne vessels.
Modeling
Models are used by engineers and scientists to understand physical processes, design engineering works, and predict future conditions. Most engineering modeling is accomplished using numerical models – computer-based solutions of mathematical equations that describe the main processes.
Forensic Engineering
Forensic Engineering is the investigation of systems that either fail to function as intended to determine the causes of failure. Forensic engineering findings are often used in legal proceedings to assign liability and allocate damages. Many forensic engineers specialize in structural, geotechnical and construction issues.
